The fragmentation of a railway: A study of organisational change in British Rail *David Tyrrall

چکیده

Privatisation has received much attention from economists and political scientists, but surprisingly little from management academics. This paper considers British Rail from strategic and organisational perspectives, in the context of a long period of commercialisation of the corporation leading up to privatisation. The changes involved are analysed using the Laughlin (1991) and Parker (1995a) frameworks. The resulting analytical framework is used reflexively and the model of organisational change is augmented to include change pathways termed 'fragmentation' and 'imposed evolution'. It is intended that this model should be of wider applicability not only to the study of public sector organisations that have undergone or are undergoing commercialisation and privatisation, but to other forms of major organisational change.

Numerical Investigation of Rail Bending Behaviour Focusing on the Effect of Track Modulus

Thorough understanding of steel rail response to wheel load is a key step towards design and evaluation of the railway track structure. In current practice, maximum vertical deflection and bending moment are calculated using the theory of infinite beam on continuous elastic foundation (Winkler model), in which the foundation stiffness is assumed as constant. However, variation of track modulus ...

Impacts of Wheel–rail at Railway Turnouts

Investigation of vertical vibrations of a railway turnout is important in designing track components under moving loads of trains. In this paper, the turnout is simulated by a linear finite element model with modal damping. A section of the turnout has a length of 36 sleeper spans surrounding the crossing. Rails and sleepers are modeled with uniform Rayleigh-&#10Timoshenko beam elements. The ra...

Risk Analysis of Stationary Rail Cars Containing Hazardous Materials; A Case Study

The purpose of this study is to analyze the risks associated with stationary rail cars carrying hazardous materials (Hazmat) in railway stations. This study considers risk analysis of the Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) storage cars queued in Sarakhs Railway Station in Iran. The congestion of LPG cars at station may lead to some incidents which can endanger people and cause damages to the propert...

Effect of Rail Corrugation on the Amount of Train Induced Vibrations near a Historical Building

The evaluation and control of the trains induced vibrations needs even more attention in the case of underground tracks which passes near to monuments and historical sites. The rail corrugations which occur due to the wheels’ impulse loads during the operation period of underground railway tracks, usually amplify the ground borne noise and vibration. In the current study, the mentioned phenomen...
